So cold a Subaru won't start.
Fortunately I got a tow back home (with spares of alternator, distributor, car).
Probably just a dead cell battery, maybe a transistor in the distributor.
There ain't much to these systems, but anything with a weak point gets amplified in this lovely weather.
I fail at winter prep.

Don't beat yourself up too much, your suspected problems couldn't have been prevented by any winter prep short of annual refurbishing of the whole charging system.

Technically, that's not me but identical in both look (they have nicer tires) and problem. I have collected the whole charging system in spares from one donor wagon and an intact hatchback on standby.
People are bemused I managed to disable a Subaru. They thought it not possible :)

This has been some pretty weird and wild weather, I've been trying for two weeks to get a replacement water heater. Fortunately for the rest of humanity I have a convenient hot shower next door when needed.

Ah thats right when anything heat-related goes-out... Last February the condenser board in my furnace decided to die the Sunday that started a week of single-digit highs. Fortunately for me I have a gas fireplace, a wood burning stove, and I got a new furnace under my home warranty.

How Cold?
Within 10 minutes I was calling friends because hypothermia sucks. Seriously, consider options rapidly. Had it been summer I would have walked up the road to the Auto-Box and gotten a battery. Otherwise, I was bundling up with what was on hand for the 45 minutes total.
